Creating Lasting Memories
When the setting is a beautiful coastline and the couple’s dog is part of the story, the experience becomes even more meaningful. Rohini and Tanay, the absolutely sweetest couple (referred to my by another longtime loyal super sweet client), gave me the flexibility in planning their maternity shoot which included their beloved and adorable dog, Dobby.
A coastal maternity shoot with your dog is more than just photos. It’s a chance to celebrate your growing family and the bond you share with your pet. These images become treasured keepsakes that tell your unique story. This session can be viewed like you're going on a date with your partner and pup, and I just happen to be there documenting the sweetest moments of this season of your life, where it is just you two and your dog, the last few weeks before the new addition. By the end of the session, Rohini and Tanay felt like old friends that I had known for years. We chatted about documenting their newborn session very soon and how one day they'd bring their baby back to this very spot. After the session. Tanay said something that absolutely melted my heart.
"This is one of my favorite days of Rohini's pregnancy ever."
I reflected later that day thinking this is right where I'm supposed to be - building human connection, capturing love in the many forms it comes in, and giving the space and experience to have moments like Rohini and Tanay did with their Dobby, that they will remember for their lifetime.

Choosing the Right Location on the Coast
A quiet cliff walk with magnificent rolling hills in the backdrop and gentle waves provides a perfect setting to capture tender moments between the couple and their dog. We chose Battery Alexander as the spot that checked all out boxes for a peaceful and stunning 1 hour maternity session. Rohini and Tanay prepped me in advance that their dog can sometimes be reactive with other dogs.
The coast offers a stunning backdrop for maternity photos. The natural light, open space, and calming sound of waves create a peaceful atmosphere. When selecting a spot, consider:
Accessibility: Choose a location easy to reach for everyone, including your dog. Avoid areas with steep cliffs or rough terrain. Given Rohini was in her third trimester, I was also keeping in mind that it was accessible from the parking lot.
Space for the dog: A wide-open beach or grassy dunes allow your dog to move freely without feeling confined.
Privacy: Less crowded beaches reduce distractions for your dog and help keep the shoot calm. There are also less distractions in the background.
Tide and weather: Check tide schedules and weather forecasts to avoid unexpected conditions that could disrupt the session.
Preparing Your Reactive Dog for the Shoot
Including a reactive dog in a photo shoot requires extra preparation. Reactive dogs may respond strongly to stimuli such as other dogs, people, or unfamiliar sounds. Here are some tips to help your dog stay calm and engaged:
Exercise before the shoot: A tired dog is often calmer. Take your dog for a long walk or play session before arriving.
Bring familiar items: Toys, treats, and a favorite blanket can provide comfort and focus. Dobby had a lot her high value treats for the session that kept her focused and calm - cheese was her favorite!
Use a leash or harness: Keep your dog secure but comfortable. A long leash allows some freedom while maintaining control. Dobby was doing perfectly fine off leash here as there weren't many people around.
Have a friend or family member assist the dog. If possible, have someone experienced with your dog’s behavior present to assist. In our case, I brought my husband to keep an eye on Dobby and their items for photos of just the couple!
Plan breaks: Allow time for your dog to rest, sniff, and decompress during the shoot.
By preparing your dog thoughtfully, you create a safer and more enjoyable experience for everyone.
Capturing Genuine Moments Between the Couple and Their Dog
The goal of a maternity shoot is to capture authentic emotions and connections. When a dog is part of the family, their presence adds warmth and personality to the images. Here are ways to encourage natural interactions:
Include playful moments: Let the dog explore, sniff, or play near the couple. Candid shots of laughter and movement often feel the most genuine.
Focus on touch: Shots of hands on the belly, the dog’s nose near the bump, or the couple holding the dog’s leash highlight the bond.
Use props sparingly: Simple items like a blanket or a small sign can add meaning without distracting from the subjects.
Capture different poses: Sitting, walking, or standing shots provide variety and show different aspects of the relationship. My favorites are showering the dog in kisses.
Be patient: Allow time for your dog to settle and for moments to unfold naturally.
What to Wear and Bring for the Shoot
Clothing and accessories can enhance the mood of your photos. Suggestions include:
Soft, neutral colors: Whites, creams, pastels, and earth tones complement coastal settings. I always recommend the couple to "coordinate" and not "match".
Comfortable fabrics: Choose breathable materials that allow movement and comfort.
Minimal patterns: Avoid busy prints that distract from faces and expressions.
Layers: Coastal weather can change quickly; bring shawls or light jackets.
Footwear: If there is walking involved in the shoot, wear comfortable shoes for the shoot or bring an extra pair to change into between locations
Essentials for the dog: Water, bowl, waste bags, and favorite treats.
Planning your wardrobe and supplies helps the session run smoothly.
